In brief
  • Two small trials compared rosemary oil with 2% minoxidil over six months, not the 5% strength.
  • A 90-day study linked a rosemary-lavender oil to faster growth and thicker strands against control.
  • Oral minoxidil ranges and peptide findings rest on consensus or small short samples.

Two research groups placed rosemary oil beside minoxidil 2%, and later teams added peptides, low dose oral minoxidil and regenerative care to the record. The record came into focus around the June 2026 guide and a 90 day trial reported before 10 September 2026.

In 2015 Panahi and colleagues followed 100 people with androgenetic alopecia through six months of rosemary oil or minoxidil 2%. Both arms recorded significant gains in hair count from baseline with no significant gap between arms. Scalp itching appeared more often with minoxidil, at 44.4% compared with 15% for rosemary, and dandruff appeared more often with minoxidil, at 32.2% compared with 7.5% for rosemary.

In 2020 Nasirian and colleagues followed 60 participants through 24 weeks of 2% rosemary oil or 2% minoxidil. Hair count rose 10% with rosemary and 13% with minoxidil, with p equals 0.12. The narrow gap deserves attention, and the dose deserves equal attention. Those trials tested 2% minoxidil, not the stronger 5% formulation many adults use, so parity does not establish equivalence to current standard dosing.

The most recent rosemary data combines the plant with lavender against a control. In 2025 Patel and colleagues placed 90 participants on oil with rosemary and lavender, a peptide formulation or control for 90 days. The rosemary-lavender arm increased hair growth rate by 57.73% versus control at p less than 0.0001. The same arm increased thickness by 68.70% and density by about 32% versus control, while shedding dropped by more than 40%.

Bench work suggests one possible mechanism. Murata and colleagues reported in 2013 that rosemary leaf extract inhibited 5-alpha reductase by 82.4% at 200 ug per mL and 94.6% at 500 ug per mL in vitro. In that same lab assay the reference compound finasteride showed 81.9 percent inhibition. Activity in glass does not predict activity on skin.

Peptides still sit lower in the evidence root system. A phase 2A trial of PP405, a peptide that activates hair follicle stem cells, recorded statistically significant regrowth in eight weeks among 78 patients. A telogen effluvium study followed 45 subjects aged 18 to 45 years in three groups of 15 for 90 days, giving Capilia longa blends, cytokine and peptide blends, and redensyl with aminexil at 2 mL once daily. Samples remain small, follow up remains short and formulas differ.

Low dose oral minoxidil is shifting from clinic habit toward shared rules. An international consensus on starting treatment and on monitoring earned 4th place as a poster at the 2024 American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting. The label set daily ranges of 0.625 to 2.5 mg for adolescent females, 0.625 to 5 mg for adult females, and 1.25 to 5 mg for adolescent and adult males. Visible efficacy is generally recorded between 3 to 6 months of steady use. That guidance rests on expert consensus because larger trials remain limited. A meta analysis found platelet rich plasma raised hair count and density clearly versus controls. Regenerative therapies like PRP have become an important part of how we approach early hair loss, because they harness the body own healing signals, said Dr. Lindsay Bordone, MD, FAAD, dermatologist at Columbia University and the American Academy of Dermatology.

For a slow routine, the tradeoff stays plain to see. Rosemary calls for daily care and patience, with less itch in these trials but without proof of lasting gains after stopping. It remains unknown whether store oils match standardized preparations or match minoxidil 5 percent over 12 months.

Look for larger trials that use standard 5 percent dosing, named peptide doses and longer follow up.
